WASHINGTON: India on Tuesday pushed again strongly towards criticism from the United States of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the
Nationwide Register of Citizens
), including recommendations for sanctions from home minister
and “other principal leadership”, indicating interpretation that they seek to strip citizenship from any Indian citizen of any faith is “neither exact nor warranted”.
“Every single country, which includes the United States, has the proper to enumerate and validate its citizenry, and to exercising this prerogative as a result of different policies,” the ministry of external affairs explained in a strongly-worded statement, clarifying that the Bill supplies “expedited consideration for Indian citizenship to persecuted spiritual minorities presently in India from sure contiguous countries.”
