A United States navy agreement with SpaceX has been modified to allow for potential launches aboard reused Falcon nine boosters, conserving the US tens of thousands and thousands of dollars.
The sequence of Lockheed Martin built GPS III satellites operated by the U.S. Space Force’s Area and Missile Units Center has been typically released on new expendable boosters. The 1st two GPS III spacecraft released on an expendable Falcon 9 and a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket.

An earlier contract modification was built to permit Falcon nine boosters launching GPS III missions to attempt landings. In June, the third GPS III automobile launched on a Falcon 9 from House Start Elaborate 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Power Station in Florida. It was the first time a booster carrying a GPS III car was recovered.

“I am happy of our partnership with SpaceX that allowed us to properly negotiate agreement modifications for the future GPS III missions that will help save taxpayers $52.7 million while sustaining our unprecedented record of good results,” Dr. Walt Lauderdale, Area and Missile Systems Centre Falcon Systems and Functions Division chief reported in a statement presented by The U.S. Space Force’s Room and Missile Units Center.
SpaceX president and main working officer Gwynne Shotwell commented that, “We take pleasure in the exertion that the U.S. Area Force invested into the analysis and are delighted that they see the gains of the engineering. Our intensive encounter with reuse has permitted SpaceX to continually improve the fleet and conserve significant valuable tax bucks on these launches.”
The new modification to the GPS III start services deal permits the Falcon nine boosters to not only be recovered but to be launched on formerly flown boosters. This amendment, even so, will only acquire influence for the foreseeable future launches of the GPS III SV05 & SV06 satellites.

The plan to start the collection of GPS III satellites on reused Falcon 9s was at first supposed to start off throughout Section 2 of the launch services contract in 2021. The current deal with the U.S. Place Force will conclude with the launch of the GPS III SV06 satellite in 2021. The Countrywide Stability Area Start application Section two contracts for the remaining 4 GPS III satellites have not but been awarded and will be bid on by the two SpaceX and ULA.
The future launch of the GPS III SV04 satellite now slated to come about on Tuesday, September 29 from SLC-40 will employ a model new Falcon 9 booster (B1062). The clean Falcon 9 performed a wholesome static fire exam of its 9 Merlin 1D engines early on the morning of Friday, September 25. Afterwards that evening the encapsulated payload was captured by Twitter person GoalieBear88 throughout its transfer from a close by processing facility to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to be mated with the Falcon 9 booster.
Really should all continue nominally concerning now and the meant launch day the GPS III SV04 mission is slated to start throughout a window extending from 9:55-10:ten p.m. EDT on Tuesday, September 29 (0155-0210 UTC Sept. thirty). The forty fifth Temperature Squadron predicts the weather to be largely favorable with a 70% probability of satisfactory circumstances at the time of launch. Should a 24 hour recycle be wanted the weather conditions improves a bit to 80%.
